History of Kawartha Lakes Region By John Byrne
Kawartha Lakes Region (KLR), is the newest region of the Antique and Classic Car Club of Canada, and is located in the heart of cottage country 1½ hours northeast of Toronto. Members from various regions moved to the area after retirement and got tired of driving back for regional club events. Over the years we had all formed friendships and knew if we didn’t remain a part of ACCCC, over time friendships formed would be lost.
During the fall of 2000 we attended local cruise nights, talking about the benefits of ACCCC and our thoughts of forming a new region. We pointed out one of the key benefits is that it’s family oriented, not just a guys (or gals) club, but a FAMILY club. Once we had the minimum 10 members needed to start a region, we held a preliminary meeting on December 18, 2000. On January 5, 2001 Ted Percival and John Byrne were to attend the Board of Directors’ meeting, but the meeting was cancelled due to weather.
We now had to put the cart before the horse. Our first membership meeting was scheduled for January 20 and we couldn’t cancel the very first meeting. It went on as planned. We confirmed the name of our new region, the name of our newsletter, the constitution, as well as establishing monthly events for the year.
Members attending our first meeting were:
Fred & Shirley Bartlett , John & Sandra Byrne
Bill & Nancy Given, Warren & Pat Grant
Neil & Ardele Murchison, Bud & Sharon Murray
Paul & Morlene Norris, Frank Pagniello
Don Parsons, Ted & Sylvia Percival
Les Reid , Brian Stockdale
Rob Waterson , Gail & Derwin Welsh
In February, 2001 Ted and I did attend the Board of Directors’ meeting. We outlined what had transpired at our January 20th meeting and asked National to accept our application to become an ACCCC region. We provided a copy of our constitution and, once a motion was adopted accepting our application, KLR presented National with a cheque for its portion of the dues. Since 2001 we’ve grown as a region averaging over a 100 members per year.
With members from Lindsay, Fenlon Falls, Bobcaygeon, Buckhorn, Peterborough and Lakefield to name a few. We have events every month, holding true to being a family oriented region. Since our formation we have hosted these National events:
AGM October 2008, AGM 2024.
TTY 2010, TTY 2014, TTY October 2022.
